Rep. Luis V. Gutiérrez stepped down Thursday from the House Intelligence Committee in order to focus on immigration, guns and the fall campaign.

The Illinois Democrat told CQ Roll Call his decision stemmed from the recognition that he has other more immediate priorities, and not from a lack of interest in the panel’s work.

Gutiérrez said he wants to focus his energies on the 2016 campaign, his position on the Democratic National Convention platform committee, and the broader effort to defeat Donald Trump.

“It was a time issue,” he said.

An aide to Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi said she would fill the committee vacancy but that there was no immediate timeline to do so.
