GOP Walks Tightrope on Obamacare Subsidies

With the Supreme Court set to rule on a case that could strike down federal health care subsidies for millions of individuals, a divide between House and Senate Republicans over how to respond has emerged. At Senate Republicans’ weekly news conference Tuesday, Sen. John Barrasso, R-Wyo., said the GOP plan would “protect” individuals who could lose subsidies, but would not go in to specifics when pressed for details. “We have worked on legislation in both the House and the Senate, we’re coming very close together on that, we’ll bring that out after the Supreme Court makes a ruling and it does protect those people who have felt that they were following the law, even though the president wasn’t actually following the law,” Barrasso said. “… The president has also said that he has made no plans — no plan B — for what happens if the Supreme Court rules against him, and I think that’s been irresponsible on the part of this president and The White House.” Sen. Ron Johnson, R-Wis., has proposed legislation enabling health care exchange enrollees to keep federal subsidies through September 2017.
