A Senate Judiciary subcommittee hearing on the Affordable Care Act got off to an odd start Thursday, when Sen. Ted Cruz, R-Texas, gaveled in without any witnesses. Despite informing the committee that three Treasury Department officials would not be available to testify due to ongoing litigation, Cruz kicked off the hearing by slamming the Obama administration’s “arrogance” for ignoring the subcommittee’s oversight function. “These three empty seats demonstrate the ongoing contempt for Congress and for the American people that is manifested by the Obama administration,” Cruz said. “For the Treasury Department to tell the United States Senate they have no time, they will not even answer questions about how they promulgated rule making in direct conflict with statutory text, is the height of arrogance.”
