In a new video message, Sen. Lisa Murkowski is encouraging her fellow Alaskans to celebrate Ted Stevens Day on Saturday.

“Sen. Stevens, or ‘Uncle Ted’ as many of us knew him, was the Alaskan of the 20th century and always put Alaska above partisan politics,” the Alaska Republican said. “This year, Alaskans have seen me put on my Hulk scarf and channel my inner Ted Stevens to fight in the Senate for what is important to Alaska.”

Murkowski, the ranking member on the Interior-Environment Appropriations subcommittee, wore the Hulk scarf to a hearing with Interior Secretary Sally Jewell in March. The move came as a nod to Stevens’ famous Incredible Hulk tie, which he was known to wear on the Senate floor when preparing for battle.

“Every now and again, you have to let your inner Ted shine through,” said Murkowski, praising his work to fund infrastructure projects and the state’s defense base — much of which came through earmarks.

The annual Ted Stevens Day celebration takes place in the summer because it’s designed as a celebration of Alaska’s great outdoors. Murkowski’s video appears below:
