A bipartisan collection of 100 House Members wrote to the Joint Committee on Deficit Reduction today urging it to consider “all options for mandatory and discretionary spending and revenues” and to aim for a $4 trillion deficit reduction package.

The 60 Democrats and 40 Republicans span the ideological spectrum, but they all agree that “the success of [the super committee] is vital to our country’s future,” they wrote.

“We know that many in Washington and around the country do not believe we in the Congress and those within your committee can successfully meet this letter,” the letter states. “We believe that we can and we must.”

Reps. Mike Simpson (R-Idaho) and Heath Shuler (D-N.C.), a co-chairman of the Blue Dog Coalition of fiscally conservative Democrats, were the leading forces behind the letter, which took weeks to put together. Other supporters include House Minority Whip Steny Hoyer (D-Md.), House Democratic Caucus Chairman John Larson (Conn.) and Rep. John Carter (Texas), secretary of the House Republican Conference.
