Initial plans to divide the Capitol Hill neighborhood between Ward 6 and Ward 7 have been scrapped, according to the latest map released by the D.C. Council.

The council’s decision to put Reservation 13, the redevelopment site along the Anacostia River, in Ward 7 allows Ward 6 to keep the Hill East neighborhood.

Along with the Reservation 13 site, the Central Detention Facility has been shifted from Ward 6 to Ward 7. Its inmates will be counted as part of Ward 7’s population.

The redistricting plans originally called for 17th Street Southeast between Benning Road and Pennsylvania Avenue to serve as Ward 6’s east boundary. Currently, the Anacostia River serves as the east boundary.

According to D.C. statutes, the council has until July 14 to make any adjustments to ward boundaries and vote on them.

Ward 6 Councilmember Tommy Wells was against losing any part of Ward 6 during redistricting. “With the great advocacy and activism of our Ward 6 neighbors, we were able to accomplish our goal for the most part,” he said.
