The Democratic National Committee had $9.1 million in cash on hand at the end of last month, according to its January campaign finance report filed Friday. While the DNC raised more money than it spent, the committee still increased its debt slightly from the year-end report that it filed with the Federal Election Commission.
 
The DNC raised $7.2 million from Jan. 1 to 31 and spent $4.2 million. The committee refunded almost $55,000, mostly to small-dollar contributors who exceeded their limit for the cycle or whose information the committee couldn’t verify. By comparison, the DNC showed $11,000 in refunds in its report covering January 2009.
 
The DNC increased its debt from $16 million at the end of 2010 to $16.8 million at the end of January. That includes the $15 million in loans that it took out during the 2010 election cycle.

The Republican National Committee had not filed its report by Friday evening. Campaign committee reports for the month of January must be filed by Sunday.
