Rep. Mike Honda’s tenure as chairman of the Congressional Asian Pacific American Caucus came to an end this week, but Members didn’t let him pass the torch without first undergoing some friendly ribbing.

The California Democrat was feted at a Thursday night reception in the Rayburn House Office Building.

“Believe it or not, some people actually think Asians are reserved, quiet and conservative. Well, after experiencing Mike Honda, no one has that stereotype anymore,” incoming Chairwoman Judy Chu (D-Calif.) told the crowd. Chu went on to mention Honda’s love of karaoke and “all kinds of off-the-wall jokes.”

Chu wasn’t the only one to tease Honda. Former Transportation Secretary Norm Mineta talked about the pair first meeting in 1971 when Mineta, then the mayor of San Jose, Calif., appointed Honda to the city’s planning commission.

“I’ve known Mike since I’ve been changing his diapers,” Mineta joked. “That was when he was 18 years old.”

“Norm’s ruthless,” Honda responded. These days, he said, he wears Depends.
