GOP Sets Up February Vote on Spending Bill

Majority Leader Eric Cantor announced Tuesday that the House would vote the week of Feb. 14 on a stopgap funding measure that Republicans are setting up as a vehicle to demonstrate their commitment to cutting spending.

The Virginia Republican said the measure would come to the floor under a rule that would provide an opportunity for both parties to offer amendments. Stopgap funding measures, known as continuing resolutions, often come up without amendments.

“Our intention is to allow every Member on both sides of the political aisle to come forward and offer his or her prescriptions for how we cut spending and reduce the size of government,” Cantor said.

Republicans are pitching the early announcement as a sign of their — in Cantor’s words — “commitment to cut spending.”

The current continuing resolution expires March 4.
