Rep. Travis Childers (D) scored the endorsement of the National Right to Life Committee over the weekend, just days after getting the backing of the National Rifle Association.

Childers is a top target for Republicans this fall, and getting the stamp of approval from the nation’s leading pro-gun-rights and anti-abortion-rights groups lends credibility to his culturally conservative credentials in the heavily Republican 1st district.

“I am proud to be a consistent supporter of their efforts to protect the rights of the unborn,” Childers said in a statement. “I will continue to work hard to ensure that taxpayer dollars are never used to fund abortion, and to be a champion of pro-life, north Mississippi values.”

Childers faces state Sen. Alan Nunnelee (R) in November.

“Senator Nunnelee has been a pro-life leader in Mississippi for the past 15 years,” Nunnelee spokeswoman Morgan Baldwin said. “His first vote as a Congressman will be to fire [Speaker] Nancy Pelosi [D-Calif.] because she does not stand for the conservative pro-life values of Mississippi.”
