Capitol Police officers will soon have a few new perks after the department’s union approved a new labor contract last week.

In a tally of 257-18, members of the Capitol Police Labor Committee approved a contract that will ensure new bargaining power for overtime shifts and a more streamlined discovery process during internal disputes. It will also add more union representatives, requiring one shop steward for every 50 officers in each division.

Chairman Jim Konczos has been focused on getting the contract signed since he took over the helm of the union in September. Negotiations between the union and police management have gone on for years, with one contract overwhelmingly rejected.

But with broad support for the new contract, Konczos said he expects to sign it this week with Police Chief Phillip Morse.
