Richmond Police Department officials are investigating how a bullet struck the first-floor window of the building where House Minority Whip Eric Cantor’s (R-Va.) campaign office is located.

A preliminary investigation indicates that someone fired the bullet into the air and that it struck the window “in a downward direction, landing on the floor about a foot from the window,” according to a department press release.

“The round struck with enough force to break the windowpane but did not penetrate the window blinds,” the release states. “There was no other damage to the room, which is used occasionally for meetings by the congressman.”

Members have been receiving threats since the House’s passage of the health care reform overhaul, causing Democrats to question whether Republicans were fanning the tensions of anti-reform activists. But earlier Thursday, Cantor told reporters about the incident in Richmond and, in turn, accused Democrats of using the tensions for political gain.

Richmond officials declined to say whether the incident at Cantor’s office was a result of the health care debate. But the first-floor window was struck by the bullet at about 1 a.m. Tuesday, according to the release — when the building was unoccupied.

“The Richmond Police Department is sharing information about the incident with appropriate law enforcement agencies,” the release states. “At this time there are no suspects.”
